Au d’ Hex is about real food, with carefully developed, well-balanced dishes using top quality local ingredients. Cooked simply and using the same methods generations before us have done to showcase the flavours of the fresh, seasonal produce. We’re inspired by and in turn would like to pay homage to our rich cultural and natural heritage, and this is reflected in both the menu and the design of the restaurants.

We believe in creating not only memorable dishes, but a memorable dining experience you’d want to linger over and enjoy no matter the occasion – whether it be a family dinner, a business lunch or simply meeting with friends to catch up and have a good time over delicious food and excellent drinks.

After a decade-long stint at some of London’s most celebrated restaurants, Cape Town-born chef Jacques Fourie has returned to South African shores to head up the kitchen at Au d’ Hex.

Classically-trained at the Granger Bay Hotel School, Fourie started out in the kitchen of his now-wife’s historic Italian restaurant. The experience, he says, inspired him to travel to foreign shores to broaden his culinary horizons.

After moving to London in 2007, he had the privilege of working in the kitchen of a Michelin-starred restaurant at Gary Rhodes’ Rhodes W1. He then joined Ben Tish’s Salt Yard Group in 2008, where he spent 5 years learning the ropes in the high-end Spanish tapas game.

After moving through the ranks and becoming Tish’s right-hand man, he opened Ember Yard Charcuterie Bar and Grill, a high-end tapas restaurant focusing on wood-fired cooking that gained two AA rosettes and leapt straight to #2 on Time Out’s Best Restaurants in London list.

Frequent collaboration with Tish produced a hugely popular cookbook based on the Ember Yard restaurant, climbing the best-seller lists in the UK, Netherlands, Australia and USA.

However, the call from his homeland became too loud to ignore and, after a fortuitous meeting with a former colleague during a family holiday in Cape Town, he made the pilgrimage back to the Mother City. He has now joined the team at Au d’ Hex in Wellington, where he brings to life his philosophy of using fresh, quality ingredients combined with wood-fired cooking to bring flavours to life in new and exciting ways.

Our restaurant is set in the heart of the Wellington winelands and surrounded by the most beautiful gardens.

It is in this setting that we pride ourselves to deliver only fresh and homemade food to our clients and customers. Our aim is to give our guests a laidback experience with easy going food to pair with the delicious wines from Wellington.

Our restaurant is not only perfect for enjoying a delectable meal while being surrounded by the beautiful landscape but for any function or event.

We are perfectly situated for cyclists to come and enjoy our amazing menu, coffee, craft beer and wine after exploring Wellington’s famous mountain biking tracks.
